Research Paper Caleb LacroixMs Barbara Barklow Monsters and Misfits 6 May 2019 The Hoho Man AKA Santa For a couple years the film The Bye Bye Man has been out and I personally love how it uses the avoidance theory. So in my adaptation I am gonna make it a Christmas night and The Hoho man will be handing out presents to kids that say HO! HO! If you don’t he’ll make you say it by striking fear into your soul. For example he will make you see a ferocious pit bull that’s barking at you and it will be a cute little puppy. This ties into how The Bye Bye man uses avoidance theory because if the kids avoid saying his name the Ho Ho man will try and make them say his name so he can give them presents. The Bye Bye man will try and scare them to spread his name so he can become stronger and will ruin people’s life. The Ho Ho man wants his name spread because he wants to give everyone in the world presents so if you don’t say it he will find you and make sure you say his name. I will be researching what the avoidance theory is and how the movie The Bye Bye man uses it also how I could use it in the Ho Ho man. This will help me because I would be able to replicate how they use it in the Bye Bye Man. Therefore make an accurate adaptation of the Bye Bye Man into the Ho Ho Man where kids who say his name get presents and the kids who don’t he will go to you and make sure you do by making sure you’re scared of him and say HO HO MAN so he can spread the holiday cheer of presents to everybody.
Annotated Bibliography “The Bye Bye Man don’t watch it; don’t encourage it”* In this review of The Bye Bye Man Fine uses the avoidance theory by explaining the Bye Bye Man’s intentions. “His shtick is is simply to drive those who say his name into insanity”. Fines quote fits with my Essay because I will be showing how the Ho Ho Man pushes people over the edges to give them presents and spread holiday cheer to all the people in the world. The Ho Ho man makes sure people know his name just like the Bye Bye Man. “What the hell is a Bye Bye Man”* In this review Jackson basically shits on the Bye Bye man and how bad of a movie it was but he does state a very good point. “But most importantly, he causes the young protagonists of the movie to have life-like visions of worms, horrific accidents, and, in Eliot’s case, his best friend having sex with his girlfriend”. This fits with my essay because the Ho Ho man will be making the kids see stuff that they don’t want to so they’ll say his name. “Happy Halloween: The Bye-Bye Man (2017) Review” This review is about the movie before it came out but in they still talked very bad about the movie saying it was poorly directed. But they look into one scene particularly, “Eliot blurts out the monsters name during a night-time séance that he, John, Sasha and Sasha’s psychic friend Kim had after a wild night of partying”. This quote fits with my adaptation because I’m going to include this scene with The Ho Ho man and it explores how right when you say his name all hell breaks loose for you. “The defense motivation system:A theory of avoidance behavior.” The reason I chose this website is because in the adaptation I’m gonna be looking into the Avoidance theory as well and how it works so basically if you avoid something it becomes a stronger though in your head. “With these assumptions and the resulting model we attempt to resolve several long standing problems in avoidance learning, including the low correlation between negative affect and avoidance performance, differential rates of extinction for avoidance performance and conditioned emotional responses, and evidence that some avoidance responses are much more easily learned then others.(Line 11-14, Crawford). This is a whole study that Cambridge did on the avoidance theory and it fits in my adaptation because I’m going to be using the theory in The Ho Ho man. “The Moderating Role of Avoidance Behavior on Anxiety over Time: Is There a Difference between Social Anxiety Disorder and Specific Phobia?” This article talks about how mental disorders are in some way related to the avoidance theory. “This study examined the extent to which avoidancebehavior moderates the relationship between general anxiety”. this quote fits with my essay because I’m exploring how the avoidance theory works and by what builds it up. By what this article is saying avoidance theory can become stronger in someone that is mentally disabled. “Towards a Cognitive-Learning Formulation of Youth Anxiety: A Narrative Review of Theory and Evidence and Implications for Treatment.” “The major aim of this special issue was to show case some of the exciting research being conducted around the world on cognitive and learning-related mechanisms in anxiety in an effort to stimulate greater knowledge”(2,Waters) this quote shows the research that they’re focusing on and they are saying anxiety could be related to the avoidance theory. Like for example people who are more anxious are more likely to avoid situations because it ends up causing even more stress and anxiety. For closure these 6 sources strengthened my essay because I learned a lot about the Bye Bye Man and how it was made and how much people hated it. But I loved it personally. I also went into depth about the avoidance theory and the avoidance theory fits with the Bye Bye man. Those young adults that star in the movie end up trying to avoid dealing with the pressures from the Bye Bye man and killing themselves. Statement Caleb LacroixArtist Statement Barbara Barklow 4/23/19 The literary source I have chosen to adapt is the movie The Bye Bye man. I have chosen this film because I personally love how the movie portrays the monster, since if you say his name he will come into your life and try his best to ruin it and make you say his name to other characters in the movie. This movie relates to our class concepts because this man is clearly a monster with him ruining your life to try to get to others and ruin theirs too. The demon in this film is mainly ran off of fear and if something that he shows you makes you scared and you believe it, the man will become more prominent and more realistic in your life. This film also focuses on your fears way more then your weaknesses and the Bye Bye man feeds off of your fear. For example Eliot’s biggest fear in the film is losing his girlfriend and the Bye Bye man disguised his girlfriend as his best friend. His friend was attacking him and wasn’t doing well, so Eliot shot him but it was really his biggest fear of them all losing his girlfriend and she died because he shot her. The Bye Bye man uses your mind and can control it to see what you don’t want to see for example one time when Eliot was getting his daily dose of the Bye Bye man he saw John and Sasha (his girlfriend) hooking up and it started a fight between all of them. I like this film because all of the motifs in the movie are obvious, like you know something bad is going to happen when a gold coin drops. Or even worse when you see the dog. I also like this movie because how it’s based around our time because it makes it seem more realistic. Some things I don’t like about the movie are one the ending I don’t like how all the main characters besides John die. Two I don’t like how long it takes to build up the scarier parts of the movie, for example all of the scariest parts are towards the end of the movie. I don’t think I could really make any changes to the movie because the whole point of a scary movie nowadays is to build up the suspense and end off very well. So it just wouldn’t of been as good if at the beginning they just start getting harassed immediately by The Bye Bye man. If you were to change the setting of this movie it really wouldn’t change that much because their isn’t a whole lot of technology and they still used carrier lights to light where they would go. Maybe if it were very far in the future they could make a device to expect when the Bye Bye man was coming. If I were to change a character to make a huge difference it would be Eliot because the rest of them wouldn’t of lived that long without him. If I were to change Eliot to another character like John he wouldn’t believe anything and would get everybody around him killed because he was the only one who didn’t swear to say his name if anyone asked them about it. I couldn’t see a sequel of this movie because the main character of the movie died the only way they could add to the movie is if at the end John actually told the detective the name. Which I could see him doing that so The Bye Bye Man 2 coming soon. In my adaptation I will explore the DONT THINK IT DONT SAY IT philosophy behind the Bye Bye man, which Eliot uncovers but it still didn’t do anything because him and his girlfriend both died due to the Bye Bye man getting in their heads. The philosophical questions I will explore is again the DONT THINK IT DONT SAY IT message because if Eliot really solved it then him and his friends shouldn’t of died so I think that message is a whole lot more then thinking that something is fake and it ends up killing him and his girlfriend.
